- It is found from North Mexico up to the Central part of South America. The life span is about 30 years.
- Adult specimens can attain 2 meters in length and weigh more than 5 kg. Males are characterized by a crest from the head up to the middle of the tail.
- Every year more than 800000 specimens are exported for sale to zoological shops all round the world, besides, these animals strongly suffer also from the local population who eat not only the lizards themselves, but also their eggs.
