Striped skunk
Mephitis mephitis
Class: Mammals (Mammalia)
Order: Carnivorous (Carnivora)
Family: Mustelidae (Mustelidae)
- It is found on the American continent from Central Canadian south to the northern Mexico;
- Longevity (in captivity) is 10 years;
- A young skunk can splash its offender already at the age of eight days, but it is able to “shoot” to an aim only when its eyes will be opened;
- Skunks are easily tamed and are kept as domestic animals. Tame skunks – and there are many of them – do not “shoot”, even if their glands are not ablated. Usually they limit themselves with patter of their feet. Striped skunks are tender, kind, jolly and playful little animals.
