For the Specialists
Tula Regional Exotarium is a scientific and research center. We are a base laboratory of the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of Russia. 14 specialized laboratories contain more than 300 reptiles and amphibia. These are the laboratories where the unique data on reproductive biology are collected, the hybridization experiments having no parallels in the world history are performed, the mechanisms of genetic inheritance are studied, taxonomic researches are taken, species and subspecies new for the science are described. On the basis of this living collection articles in home and foreign journals are published. Data collected by our specialists served as a basis for 2 books published in St. Petersburg and Berlin in 2004.

Every year we see the birth of more than 4000 young animals from more than 170 species some of which are threatened by extinction! Tula Exotarium actively participates in the ecologic and conservation programs on saving rare species. Besides going on expeditions around Russia and CIS countries Tula scientists take part in studying hard-to-reach mountainous areas of the Northern Vietnam, China, Nepal, Indonesia and Iran. They manage to bring species which are new, unknown for the science, but are already threatened to be extinct. Then these animals are adapted for the living in captivity and scientists try to get the geniture. Currently the exotarium has already created self-replicating populations in dozens of vulnerable species of pythons, vipers, keffiyehs, racers, and 2 species living in Tula have already become absolutely extinct in their wildlife habitual areas. The results of the Tula herpetologists’ work have been acknowledged worldwide!
The exotarium serves as a basis for the Tula Division of the Russian Entomological Society under the Academy of Sciences of Russia. This Division studies the entomofauna of our region, forms collections of the world fauna insects, organizes entomological subject exhibitions, publishes scientific and popular science editions, takes part in creating and monitorying specially protected areas of the Tula region and creating the regional Red Book.
